Once urban legend, Amtrak now offers Residencies for reals. They will pay for 2-5 days of North American travel while you sit aboard and write your own Murder on the Orient Express or whatever. This is marketing for them, of course, so don't apply unless you have lots of twitter/facebook/instagram "friends".
